It's easy to get lost and stop at all the different steps of sewing.
At Hatobu, we put all the material & knowledge in a kit to get you started

What’s in the kit?

In the box, you will receive all the necessary parts and components for the project. You'll receive a digital or printed version of the manual, a 33-page booklet with hand-drawn illustrations to guide you through all the steps.

Who’s it for?

This kit is designed for those who are already familiar with a home sewing machine and are looking for a more challenging project to further develop their skills. There's a big step from learning to use a sewing machine to being able to design and sew your own products by understanding and applying sewing techniques. Hatobu is an educational tool to help you level up.

The difficulty level ranges from enthusiastic beginners to advanced hobbyists. A weekend should be a reasonable amount of time to complete this project, but please follow the tutorial at your own pace.

How is this different from free plans or other purchased plans (e.g., Etsy)?

So, we provide both the instructions and all the materials you need to get started. But instead of just giving you a square of fabric to cut yourself, we pre-cut all the pieces with a laser. We source the materials for you and minimize waste by only giving you the materials you need for the project.

Without boring you too much (since we're engineering students):
We've developed a method for adding instructions to the seam allowances of the patterns so you can make your bag. These instructions allow us to write the instructions without specifying measurements, making the instructions much clearer and easier to understand.

This allows us to make the instructions more comprehensive and challenging without overcomplicating the materials and overloading the reader.

What can you expect? How long does it take?

Here's a video in which Minke demonstrates how to make the hobby bag kit. It took her about eight hours, divided into two sewing sessions, to complete the project. Basic sewing knowledge is highly recommended. Minke is who we consider an enthusiastic beginner to intermediate sewer.

We currently only provide one kit as a proof of concept, but we definitely have some things developing behind the scenes. We are hearing from many people that they would be interested in learning and making their own clothes. However, we have to look at the complexity, dificulty, and logistics of providing customized clothing kits. We believe it should be possible to provide tailored pre-cut patterns that fits your body. But it will require us more time to get the engineering and process right.

We are also looking into creating a more diverse set of kits suitable for both beginners and more experienced makers. This should also make the kits more suitable for children. We hope to offer an educational experience for everyone, regardless of their skill level.

Will there be more kits in the future?
